Smallzy’s Surgery is a heavyweight of nighttime FM radio. The celebrity-interview show repeatedly tops the CRA survey rankings for evenings, and has racked up multiple ACRA awards in the process.

It’s a testament to the talent of host Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small, but he doesn’t work in isolation – it takes a team of three producers to make Smallzy’s Surgery happen.

One of them is junior producer Seth Jayalath.

Seth spoke to In Focus’ Josh Pierce on Tuesday, saying working for a go-to celebrity interviewer requires hitting the ground running.

“Smallzy is a very, very busy person…he talks to all the celebrities pretty much every night.”

“It’s full on from the get go, but once the show starts…that’s when you can relax a little bit.”

For Seth, the biggest challenge is finding the right content.

“Sometimes there isn’t content every day, (and) you really have to scrape the barrel to find something to put forward…finding something that is relevant, that is topical, that is appropriate, and something that’s really gonna get audience engagement.”

Over the past year though, he’s learnt to broaden his approach.

“Really anything can be made into content.”

In Focus airs Monday to Saturday at 1PM on iHeart Radio or listen back with the In Focus Catch-up Podcast.
