The Rural Fire Service Advice for a “Hot Girl Summer”

You can’t miss the smoke around Sydney at the moment, a thick cloud of low lying smoke covers the city most mornings. Early morning exercise goers and asthma sufferers are being warned that it could be around for the next two weeks.

The smoke is due to planned backburning happening in Sydney surrounds throughout the next month, as the RFS catch up on standard hazzard reduction burns, from a particularly wet winter period.

Ben at the Rural Fire Service spoke to AFTRS FM on Monday and advised asthma sufferers to carry their inhaler with them and stay indoors if they are having issues breathing. He also advised that the smoke would likely be more intense earlier in the day and would subside “as the day heats up”.

Whilst we aren’t in the same situation as the 2019/20 summer where bushfires were particularly destructive, The RFS says backburning is required to minimise risk. We are expecting a hotter and drier summer than previous years, so this preparation is particularly important.

“People havent seen or smelt this in a couple of years” and so the large cloud of smoke, hanging over the city has come as a surprise this week. Ben goes onto say that the hazzard reduction burns protect thousands of people and houses every year.

The burns will continue to take place over the next two weeks and smoke should subside during the warmer parts of the day.

Sydney siders will be able to enjoy a hot girl summer, knowing the risk of bushfires are being responsibly managed by the RFS.
