You spend 5 hours perfecting your resume and cover letter. Then, you submit your application for the job of your dreams. But days turn to weeks and you hear nothing back from the employer. What did you do wrong? Bad CV? Not enough experience? Well, the problem might not actually be you; as the job you applied for may not even exist.
In a 2024 study by the job recruitment platform, Greenhouse, nearly a third of job ads posted on the website are fabricated. This statistic is believed by some experts to reflect other online platforms.
The prevalence of these listings has coined them the name: “Ghost Jobs”. They’re a job ad for a position that’s non-existent or has already been filled. Their impact can span from the applicant’s wellbeing to the inflation of a nation’s economy. Whilst countries like Canada and America have taken lawful action against this practice, Australia lacks any regulations of its own. So, what should the national job market do about these listings? Who should regulate them and how can job seekers identify them?
