I mean it’s obvious… she has the best music, and she has the coolest fans. What more is there to know?
Well, actually… quite a lot.
Taylor Swift fandom didn’t appear overnight. It’s the result of years of hard work, dedication, and a level of personal connection that sets her apart from nearly every other artist in the industry today.
Kate Pattison, a PhD candidate at RMIT university who studies pop music fandom, says there are many reasons why Taylor Swift has managed to build such a strong and loyal fan base.
“Consistency and the variety of music that she has released… there’s a there’s a kind of Taylor Swift album for every kind of mood”
It goes even deeper than just music. From the beginning of her career, she has made it a priority to personally engage with her fans.
“Replying to people’s comments, having secret sessions where fans are invited to her home, sending fans gifts at Christmas, there’s real, consistent communication with fans that not all musicians do.”
Even now, as a billionaire she manages to maintain this connection with her fans.
“If we look at something like ‘The New Heights’ podcast that she did, she’s giving little titbits about her life… when she first met Travis, being with her family… she’s talking about baking, sourdough… and in this sort of 1 to many format is also giving you a glimpse at her normal day-to-day life.”
It’s this blend of authenticity, accessibility, and artistry that has helped Taylor Swift build not just a fan base, but a community.
