The Return of Y2K: Why Everyone is Dressing like its 1999

The year is 1999. The date? 31st of December. The time? 11:59pm.

Everyone is readying themselves for the turn of the millennium, and likely… the end of the world!

Whether you were bunkering down for the apocalypse or doing your best Britney Spears impression, one thing united everyone… their outfit.

If you were a girl, it was all about low-rise jeans, crop tops, heels and designer handbags. If you were a guy, you were probably rocking skater jeans, Vans and a faded graphic tee.

What no one realised on that night, was that the outfits they were wearing would inspire a generation of people who hadn’t even been born yet.

Flashforward to now, and the Y2K wardrobe is back with a vengeance. Low-rise jeans, crop tops, heels, and designer bags have all re-entered the fashion scene.

But why now?

Well, Andrew Armstrong, who worked in the fashion industry in London for three decades, says that the return of Y2K is a perfect collision of societal factors.According to Armstrong, today’s youth are, on some level, longing to disconnect from tech and reconnect with a simpler, pre-digital era, like the late ’90s and early 2000s.

He also thinks that the simple jeans and t-shirt look reflects the current cost of living crisis,

“You’re investing in a good pair of jeans and any old T-shirt that you can make look cool”

Most simply though, nostalgia comes in 30-year cycles. So, Y2K is right on schedule for its comeback.

Now is the perfect time to raid your mum’s closet and hunt through vintage racks, but don’t wait too long because the next trend is just around the corner.
