Tiktok has gone wild with the trend of hobby horsing, taking over our small screens.
You may have seen kids and adults competing in the new sport called “hobby horsing” online. It may not be what you expect however, when horses are mentioned. There are no horses. Or animals at all for that matter. Hobby horses are actually a soft toy horse head attached to a small stick. Making the sport is safe for young kids and adults alike.
The sport has taken off in Finland, where it’s a serious competition and not just playing make believe, like it might be for Aussie kids.
‘Riders’ can compete in dressage, show jumping, cross country and barrel racing, much like equestrian.
When speaking to Coralie, from Hobby Horse Riding Australia, she emphasises the safety of the sport for young kids and that “it’s great fun”. We also spoke about the arts and craft element. With many riders sewing their horse heads and adjusting the lengths of the wooden sticks to suit their chosen discipline. Coralie explains “the stick needs to be shorter for show jumping… (and the) horses eyeline would be downwards for dressage”. It seems that we Aussies, like in many other ways take things a little less seriosuly and see the fun in novelty.
