The Genre That Wouldn’t Die: Why do we love so-bad-they’re-good movies?

For as long as there have been movies, there have been
bad movies. There are the exploitation films, shamelessly
cashing in on popular trends with little budget and even less
shame; the spectacular failures by auteurs who just couldn’t
pull it together; and even the self-parodies that set out to
lower the bar.

The newest genre of bad filmmaking is vertical dramas,
watched in minute-long increments on people’s phones.
AFTRS Cinematography professor Simeon Bryan thinks that
these fall into the third category – but he also offers some
reflections on why even bad movies keep us coming back.

“That kind of connection to story is so fundamental to us,” he
says. “We’re always intersecting with it in different ways.”

vertical dramas.
