Let’s face it; we’ve all practiced in the bathroom mirror while holding a shampoo bottle. The pinnacle of award shows is no doubt the Oscars, and here at AFTRS, we think so too- the Library hosts an annual winner prediction competition and watch party of the ceremony every year, and all the teachers are working hard to prep us to produce award-winning caliber quality work.
Film Historian and Oscar expert Brian Lindsay has watched his fair share of Acadmey Awards and informed me the two best methods for a speech are to either for humour or the heart.
“I think the best speeches are brief and are a mixture of the amusing and the emotional”
However, balancing self-appreciation and recognition of your own hard work in your speech versus being self-absorbed is important too. You dont want to be another Adrian Broody- who set the record for the longest speech in Oscar history at 5 minutes and 40 seconds.
It’s likely we will contiune to care about the Oscars “They have been around now for nearly a century; they’ve been around longer than almost any other cultural awards ceremony, so it has the weight of history.”
Plus the fact that the Oscars are for all aspects of filmmaking, they are for writing, acting, directing, editing, costume design, sound, therefore everything.
So there are plenty of avenues for one to pursue to help you get to that podium one day- but for now, keep practising with that shampoo bottle!
