According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare people 20% of people 18-25 don’t drink alcohol at all (AIHW, 2025).
This means fewer young people are spending their nights at bars and pubs.
So, where are they going instead?
Well, instead of getting drunk on alcohol, they are getting drunk on the taste of frozen yoghurt!
If you live near a fro-yo spot, this might not surprise you. Lines often spill out the door, filled with people indulging in a sweet treat.
Caylan, a 21-year-old frozen yoghurt enthusiast, shared why he prefers a night out at a yoghurt bar over the usual pub crawl,
“it’s not as expensive as going out… and he will wake up in the morning feeling great.”
But is frozen yoghurt actually a healthier alternative? Or would a humble pint be healthier than a bowl of frozen yoghurt topped with Nutella sauce?
Nutritionist Emma Beckett says that while frozen yoghurt isn’t a perfect health food, it’s a much better choice if it’s replacing alcohol.
“If people are linking up over a frozen yoghurt instead of linking up over a pint of beer, you can absolutely make an argument for a better health outcome.”
She also points out that it’s refreshing to see young people thinking differently about nutrition,
“We always think about obvious swaps, like yoghurt and ice cream but we don’t think about the cultural contexts of those swaps”
So, next time you’re planning a catch-up with friends, consider doing something different. Maybe it’s not fro-yo, maybe it’s a coffee, a walk, or a good meal.
Whatever it is, it’s clear that the idea of a night out is changing and it might just be for the better.
