History has it that a bolt of lightning once struck an agave plant in a field in Mexico setting it alight. A natural fermentation resulted & the beginnings of something special, a national treasure. Tequila!
Tequila is the intellectual property of Mexico & the government is strict about the regions it can be produced in. If it’s not produced in the right place, using the right plant it can’t be called Tequila.
Adam Gilchrist has been in Mexico recently and I chatted with him about tequila tradition. Gilly is joining Kendall Jenner, Geoge Clooney & The Rock in producing a traditional agave drop. He’s calling it El*Arquero.
The tequila news is that, according to Growthscope, consumption of tequila grew by 10% in Australia last year, a rate faster than any other spirit in the market. Hear some of Cate’s chat with Gilly on AFTRS FM.
