Perils and Potential of the Night-Time Economy

The night-time economy refers to all economic activity that
happens after the sun goes down – entertainment,
restaurants and bars, retail and medicine.

The NSW Government is on a mission to grow all of these
sectors. 2024 data found that NSW’s night-time economy is
worth $102 billion a year, and supports over 53,000 core
businesses.

But it’s not without consequence for the people working
night shifts. NSW Ambulance advises its paramedics that
shift workers “face an increased risk of physical injury,
psychological distress and chronic health conditions, as
well as fatigue, stress and burnout”.
