Kpop Fans Funds An Aeroplane For BTS… Gets Banned On Social Media in China

Chinese BTS fans fundraised more than 2 million Chinese yuan ($410000 AUD) to decorate a Jeju Air aeroplane with the face of BTS member Jimin for his birthday. This special plane will be on the air for 3 months and will only do domestic flights in South Korea.

However, ever since the fundraiser campaign, the group JiminBarChina reportedly was banned and removed in the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The removal is in part of the Chinese government’s movement to ban male celebrities that don’t fit the masculinity mould. Kpop has been controversial in China due to its complicated relationship with South Korea. At the same time, BTS has been censored in China due to their stance on the Korean war.

The Chinese government are now banning fandoms for popular active Kpop groups such as BTS, EXO, and Blackpink on social media for “irrational star worshipping”.
