The AFL has confirmed Perth Stadium will host the 2021 grand final due to current covid restriction in Melbourne. This year’s showpiece match is scheduled for September 25, which will allow both teams a week off before the big game.
A time slot has not yet been confirmed, however the grand final appears likely to be an early night match to allow it to be broadcast in prime time on the east coast where most AFL fans are based.
AFL chief executive Gillion McLachlan said “It has become clear as we continue to navigate through these challenges that it wouldn’t be in the best interests of the community to host a grand final at the MCG in front of no crowd,”.
This will be the second year in a row where the grand final will not be played in Melbourne with the game being played at the Gabba in Brisbane last year.
