An Australian created an eBay listing called ‘Buy My Vote’ which offered bidders the opportunity to vote yes or no in same sex marriage postal survey on their behalf. The starting bid was $1500, with the lister promising to give some of the money to charity. The ad explained “the reason I’m selling my vote is because either way I don’t care but thought there are people who do”.
The listing has since been removed for violating eBay’s terms of service.
It was condemned by both sides of the debate. The managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Lyle Shelton said “there are always going to be people out there who do silly things, and this really does trivialise what is a very important decision for the Australian nation”. Australians for Equality campaign executive director Tiernan Brady has called for people to take the postal survey seriously.
Postal surveys will be sent out next Tuesday to the 16 million Australians on the electoral roll.
