Marriage equality: tighter advertising restrictions on hold until High Court challenges clear

The Federal Government will not pass legislation restricting factually incorrect or inflammatory advertising regarding the postal survey on marriage equality until two legal challenges leveled against it clear the High Court.

Ordinary rules regarding deceptive advertising during elections are being waived for the postal survey, which is being conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and is not legally binding.

This announcement follows the first broadcast on commercial television across the country of an advertisement from the No campaign – specifically the Coalition for Marriage, led by the Australian Christian Lobby.

Grace Garde spoke to Lane Sainty on Buzzfeed to find out what happens next with the High Court challenges, set to be heard on the 5th and 6th of September.
